A BRIEF HISTORY OF URUAN
Compiled by (Dr. Ignatius Idio)

URUAN LAND IN AKWA IBOM STATE

Uruan people are found mostly in Uruan Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. Uruan land covers an area of over 449 Km. It is bounded by Itu, Odukpani, Okobo, Oron, Eket, Ekpe Atai and Uyo Local Government Areas.

ORIGIN

Uruan ancestors were among the Bantoid (Semi Bantu) and Bantu people of East-Central and South Africa, who migrated in different waves toward Western Sudan. Before they migrated to the present Uruan Country, ( Uruan Akpeh), as a result of frequent raids and influx of many people, Uruan tribemen settled in the border of Congo-Garbon-Cameroon Republics.

THE SEVEN TRADITIONAL CLANS OF URUAN

Uruan people have seven traditional clans (Essien Uruan Itiaba). These are: Aqua Uruan, Etongko Uruan, Mkpe Uruan, Mutaka Uruan, Ekondo Uruan, Mosongo Uruan, Ibonda Uruan, and Akpe Iboku Uruan. Originally, Uruan people had twelve traditional clans. But during their migration to the mainland, some of the Uruan clanspeople missed their kith and kin and stayed to found Okobo, Eket, Oron, Itu, and Opopo (now Ikot Abasi) where they settled with people of their tribes. These are Bulanki, Ntem Ntem, Ikba, Odidio, and Mbawa Uruan. In their new settlements, these uruan families continually retained their beliefs and Atakpo Deity of their hosts. However, Uuruan people in the Essien Uruan Itiaba, who established contiguous communities in the mainland maintained good relations with other tribesmen including the Ibibio. Inter-marriages, and cultural borrowings were common among the Uruan people in the mainland.

INSTITUTION OF NSOMMSHIP OR EDIDEMSHIP IN URUAN

The earliest founding fathers of Uruan developed the institution of of Kingship and Edidem Atakpo. The Nsomm of uruan was the head of the institution assisted by the “Okus” who took charge of each of the Essien Uruan (clans). The Nsomm as traditional King stood at the center for all Essien Uruan (Uruan clans) and symbolized the unity of Uruan Inyang Atakpo people.

ATAKPO

The highest deity of uruan is Atakpo. It is revered and invoked by the Nsomm in council or by “oku” under instruction of Nsomm in council. The day to day cleaning of Atakpo vicicinity of the deity and conveyance of messages from “Obio Atakpo” to Nsomm in council was the responsibility of the “Isu Atakpo.” (an indentured servant). His loyalty was to the Atakpo nad the Nsomm Uruan.

URUAN LANGUAGE

Uruan people speak both Ibibio and Efik languages.
